After hours phone answering service: AI or human, and what each costs at night

Last reviewed October 23, 2026

Quick answerAn AI receptionist answers nights and weekends on its normal monthly plan, and forwarding can switch on only after hours. A human service such as Smith.ai or Ruby costs more but puts a person on urgent calls.

After hours phone answering service: the options

An after-hours phone answering service is either an AI receptionist or a human service. An AI receptionist takes nights and weekends on its normal monthly plan. A human service puts a person on the line at a higher monthly price.

Either way, you forward your business number to the service. Ruby, for one, says you can forward it all the time, part of the time or on a delay. My AI Front Desk's pages say forwarding can be limited to after hours or weekends, and its Business-in-a-Box plan is $99 a month, billed monthly, as read on October 23, 2026. Forward only after hours, or every call

Upfirst says its plans let you choose every call, overflow only or after hours, and Rosie documents conditional forwarding for after hours. My AI Front Desk's help center documents no step for forwarding only after-hours calls, so ask the vendor how to set that on your carrier. Time Control, a My AI Front Desk rule that sends calls to another number during set hours, can route staffed hours to your team.

The help center walks through forwarding by device, iPhone, Android, landline or VoIP, and a landline needs the carrier's help. Its Instant Setup forwards every call from that device at once. Its phone product page lists *72 plus your My AI Front Desk number to start forwarding and *73 to stop it. How to set up an AI receptionist covers the steps.

Urgent calls at night: transfers and the on-call phone

A transfer rule can be limited to weekends or a custom schedule, so an urgent night call reaches an on-call phone. A rule can ring several numbers at once and connect the first person to answer. If nobody answers a Hot Transfer, the AI can resume the conversation with the caller instead of ending the call. Test a transfer by calling the receptionist's number and triggering the scenario.

Refunds and legal or medical advice stay with a person: My AI Front Desk's own page says an AI should not decide them. AI receptionist for plumbers covers emergency calls for a trade.

After-hours cost: AI plans and human services

Smith.ai says calls at 2 pm and 2 am cost the same. Ruby says 24/7 coverage carries no extra charge, though the minutes you use can rise.

My AI Front Desk's claim that it is "always on" nights, weekends and holidays is marketing, and its pages disagree on how many calls Business-in-a-Box takes at once, so ask about simultaneous calls.

Voicemail, callbacks and texts after hours

Callers can leave a voicemail when you turn that on, and the message is recorded, transcribed and saved. A notification by email or text can alert your team to a call or voicemail; Business-in-a-Box includes 3 notification recipients. A caller who wants a person needs a path, such as a promised callback after hours. A caller who hangs up early can get a follow-up text, unless the call came from a landline.

Pick Smith.ai or Ruby when a person must take urgent night calls.

On the pricing page the trial button reads "Start 7-day free trial". Forwarding one weekend of calls during it shows how the receptionist handles your callers. Terms section 12 say that if you continue, the subscription starts automatically and charges the payment method you provided, and usage fees still apply during the trial.
